Trieste Photo Days: Chromantic

As one of the selective photographer for this large Italian International Photography Festival ‘Trieste Photo Days“2020 and in conjunction with the book Chromantic: a Tribute to Alex Webb, these selections come from my separate but related street photography portfolios Six in Seven and the Light at Street Level, the latter being shot on Fujichrome and other films.

“Chromantic is a unique opportunity for photographers who wish to become part of an important collective project that will be presented in the prestigious setting of Italian festival Trieste Photo Days 2020 in the presence of international guests.” This included the guest of honour Alex Webb. Past guests of honour have included Martin Parr and Nick Turpin, all recognized experts in the field pointing to the significance of this book project and the festival’s international exhibition. This latest of unique volumes curated by the Trieste Festival assembles the volume from a chromatic perspective, as described by Sandro Parmiggiani;

“The images that have been selected by Exhibit Around flow before our eyes, divided in chapters distinguished by the explicit presence of a particular colour which manifests itself within a peculiar portion of the art of photography. This choice of subdivision revokes researches and reflections upon the “science of colours” and various experiences up on the means of expression (painting, photography, cinema) that have been conducted within the past centuries.”

The juxtaposition of different artists side-by-side evokes new interpretations of the works as they interact solely by colour and we reconsider the importance of this element in our visual storytelling. This international group exhibition and photographic book/volume happened in conjunction with Trieste Photo Days / International Photography Festival. It represents an extensive peer reviewed showcase of international photographer’s work that crosses many cultures and genres. Due to the number of countries and artists who participated, as well as some the key figures involved, such as magnum photographer Alex Webb, and Italian art critic Sandro Parmiggiani, selection and inclusion in the book and international exhibition represent not only a prestigious peer review process but also exposure to a diverse new international audience.

Description

“Trieste Photo Days is an international festival dedicated to urban photography that explores the contemporary through all forms of photography set in the urban fabric, since 2014. The festival has established itself over the years as a cross-media creative container that brings together exhibitions of Italian and foreign artists, workshops, screenings, contests, book presentations, meetings and other events related to streetphotography, architectural photography and artistic photography.” -Organizers

The exhibition took place at Palazzo Costanzi – Sala Umberto Veruda, part of an historic complex of museums, galleries, and exhibition spaces in Trieste City Centre. It plays host to regular art, historic, and social cultural exhibitions. Culminating in the festival opening and series of panelist and world renowned special guests the festival runs as a month long event providing ample opportunity for participating artists exposure to a wide audience.

The aim of the festival is to promote a type of photographic carrier of artistic, documental, ethnographic and sociological value, which bears testimony of today. A cross-section of urban contemporaneity able to speak about the social changes taking place in the big city as in the small village too
